Gladly Beyond unfolds like a spectrum—a continuum drawn from the artist’s practice over the past seven years, reflecting a small segment of a life, and a sustained exercise in reaching toward the world.

The wall presents three layers of images: photographs taken by the artist, photographs of the objects she constructed, and a third layer of “light spots” waiting to be placed.

The photographs are her way of capturing emotion, sensation, and her shifting relationship with the world. The suspended objects act as the quiet “tools” or “weapons” she once held at different stages—responses offered to the world, each shaped by its moment.

The third layer was activated during the opening, where the audience was invited to participate. It became a rehearsal of “contact,” an attempt to give a small point of light.

It might have felt awkward, anxious, or sweaty-palmed—but also honest, gentle, and endearing. This was what it looked like when we learned to move closer to the world.

This spectrum is personal, yet it also belongs to anyone learning to approach the world—those continually attempting to cross interfaces, to connect with others, with things, with the world, and ultimately with themselves.

Artist's Bio

Xiao Zhang (b. 2000) is a photographer, artist, and communicator.

Her practice explores the evolving architectures of communication—across bodies, digital platforms, and intangible dimensions. She work across photography, image, and absurd object design to rethink how connection is rehearsed, staged, and often misfires in contemporary life. 

Her works have been exhibited at Zhejiang Art Museum, Banshan Gallery (Tokyo), Horniman Museum & Gardens (London), the London Design Festival, among others.
